DVD Releases for Week of 7/30/2012

A bunch of direct to DVD releases this week - and with good reason why!

'LOL' - Intended to be a social commentary about our digitally connected world, 'LOL' is simply a mess that really has no purpose or direction.  Starring (and I use that term loosely) Miley Cyrus and Demi Moore (who seems intent on forcing her career down to the pits of hell), this loosely based remake of the far better French film is laughable at worst and torture at best.

DVD Releases for Week of 7/23/2012

A light week with DVD Releases - it seems no one wants to compete with the juggernaut that is 'The Dark Knight Rises'!

'Silent House' - Elizabeth Olsen (younger sister of the Olsen Twins) is the saving grace for this real time, continuous shot fright fest bought to you by the directors of 'Open Water'.  Olsen is fantastic here, displaying more talent than her two sisters ever have as the young woman, Sarah, who finds herself sealed inside a secluded lake house, trapped by an unknown terror.

DVD Releases for Week of 7/16/2012

Bit of a busy week for new DVDs! Some very good - all worth at least the $1.20 Redbox rental! It's a hot week across the nation - so what better way to stay cool than watch a movie?

'The Three Stooges' - The Farrelly brothers have promised for years to make a Three Stooges movie, and while it wasn't great, it wasn't bad either. Personally, I would have preferred something a little more fresh and original; instead the brothers opted to simply try and redo many of the Stooges oldest bits. Still funny today, the original bits were much more than slaps and pokes;

DVD Releases for Week of 7/10/2012

Sorry for the delay! I was a bit overwhelmed yesterday (and somewhat today) - it was another slow week for releases, but again, there is a hidden gem!

'American Reunion' - The 'American Pie' characters that were introduced nearly a decade ago are back home for their first high school reunion. If you are a fan of the 'American Pie' series, this will be a welcome bit of nostalgia I am sure. But if you are looking for anything that is remotely funny or original, you will not find it here.

DVD Releases for Week of 7/02/2012

Well - it's a light week on the DVD releases! Only a few direct to DVD releases, but the are gems!

'God Bless America' - From Writer/Director Bobcat Goldthwait (former, very insane, stand-up comedian) comes a sick and twisted social satire about a terminally ill man (Joel Murray, little brother to Bill Murray) who decides he has nothing to live for. In the process of taking his own life, he realizes that it is society that has nothing to live for and proceeds on one of the strangest, entertaining and often darkly funny killing sprees ever filmed.

DVD Releases for Week of 6/26/2012

It's a light week, but there are definitely some winners sprinkled into the releases!

'21 Jump Street' - Maybe it was Jonah Hill, but even Channing Tatum was good in this laugh riot riff on a not so classic TV series. The same series that gave us Johnny Depp is now fodder for the very funny Jonah Hill (who also had a hand in writing the script) and the equally funny Channing (who knew?); with a strong script that makes as much fun at itself as it does the series, '21 Jump Street' is a memorable comedy worth repeated viewings.

DVD Releases for Week of 6/19/2012

I am a week behind, so I will list this week's first and then last weeks! Not a lot of good releases, but a few good enough for a Redbox $1.20 rental!

'Project X' - From Todd Phillips, a pretty predictable and mostly unoriginal teen coming of age party movie. It tires too hard to be over the top and the laughs are mostly forced. There are a few bright moments in this mess and it just might be a decent way to spend $1.20 and 87 minutes of your life. Be warned, there is plenty of raunchy, just for the sake of raunchy.

DVD Releases for Week of 6/04/2012

Not a huge opening week for DVDs, just a few and one gem!! One that was practically unseen as well and would be prefect for a $1.20 Redbox rental!

'Safe House' - Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds star in this too kinetic, too frenzied story of a renegade CIA agent (Washington) and his unlikely ally, a rookie CIA operative (Reynolds). The only saving grace is the over the top performance of Washington, who even makes crap look good.

DVD Releases for Week of 5/29/2012

New DVD Releases for this week - not a whole lot of good ones, barely rentable at Redbox! But, the reviews need to be done!

'Gone' - Poor Amanda Seyfried, hasn't done anything really good since 'Mama Mia'. How does a filmmaker make a non-thrilling thriller? Seyfried has the emotional complexity of drywall, never once do we feel tension or even realize that Seyfried is showing any tyoe of emotion. Not even sure this one is even worth the $1.20 at Redbox.

DVD Releases for Week of 5/22/2012

I am a BAD reviewer! Well, let me restate that - I am a BAD poster! I will try and get better - I have recently accepted a new job as CEO of Specialty Retail & Auctions, LLC - so it has been rather crazy! But - it's catch up time! As always - click on the link to view the trailer!

'Woman in Black' - Daniel Radcliffe is far from Harry Potter in this gothic tale of horror that is traditional but very spooky along the way! Radcliffe is excellent in one of his first post Potter roles and proves himself worthy!

DVD Releases for Week of 4/10/2012

Here are the DVD releases for this week along with a brief review! Click on the titles to view the trailers! Hint: right mouse click and choose open in a new window!

  • 'The Iron Lady' - Meryl Streep stars in a very intimate but pretty standard portrait of Margaret Thatcher, the first and only female Prime Minister of England. Streep is wonderful as usual, however the story plods along as a by the book biopic, when it could have been so much more. Never has a film so under utilized it's lead actress. While fascinating, were it not for Streep, the film would have faded into the background.

  • 'We Bought A Zoo' - Acclaimed director Cameron Crowe returns to his heartfelt roots with the true life story of a single dad (Matt Damon) and his quest for a fresh start for his family after the death of his wife. Touching and funny, Damon and Crowe are a great team in bringing this wonderful story to life. While a but predictable, you forget that because the charters are so engaging.

Upcoming Releases for 3/20/2012

Here are the DVD Releases for next week along with a brief review, click on the title to view a trailer:

  • 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' - The first American adaptation of the Sieg Larson series is firmly adapted by king of creepy David Fincher. With a perfect cast including Daniel Craig, Christopher Plummer and Rooney Mara, this is a film that hits it right on all fronts. A stunning piece of filmmaking and one of my Top Ten picks for 2011.

New DVD Releases - 3/14/2012

Ok - here are the DVD release for Tuesday 3/14/2012 - each will be followed by a very brief review.

  • 'Tin Tin' - Steven Spielberg released two movies during the same time period, a modern feat for a director of his caliber, he is a very busy man. This week, 'Tin Tin' makes its way to BluRay and DVD. Based on the hugely popular comic book series, 'Tin Tin' follows the adventures of a young reporter in pursuit of the ultimate story. The animation is amazing and the film itself is a cross between 'Indiana Jones' and 'Annie', but without the music. While this did not do well in theaters (animation overload I suspect) it is well worth the trip to Redbox!
