DVD Releases for Week of 7/30/2012

A bunch of direct to DVD releases this week - and with good reason why!

'LOL' - Intended to be a social commentary about our digitally connected world, 'LOL' is simply a mess that really has no purpose or direction.  Starring (and I use that term loosely) Miley Cyrus and Demi Moore (who seems intent on forcing her career down to the pits of hell), this loosely based remake of the far better French film is laughable at worst and torture at best.

'Detention' - Ok - please...someone tell Dane Cook to just go away. Doesn't he realize that he is neither funny or talented? If you like his stand-up (and I dare you to admit it) - you may like this mash-up of horror, sci-fi, comedy and teen coming of age story. Me, just reading that Dane Cook was in it was painful enough.

'ATM' - Two co-workers leave a holiday party and stop at the local ATM vestibule for some cab money only to be trapped by a would be killer with temperatures dropping below freezing. It's actually not a bad rental for either NetFilx or RedBox, if you have nothing better to do. It delivers a few good schmaltzy scares, even if you have to suspend disbelief quite a bit.

'4.3.2.1' - A basic 'girl power' movie get a little 'Pulp Fiction' tossed in with the jewel heist caper flick. Director Noel Clarke tries a little too hard to be Tarantino cool but offers a passable film for RedBox or NetFlix; in other words, what do you want for $1.20?

Just as a note - DVDs will be slim pickings until later in August when 'The Hunger Games' arrives on August 18th!
