DVD Releases for Week of 6/26/2012
It's a light week, but there are definitely some winners sprinkled into the releases!
'21 Jump Street' - Maybe it was Jonah Hill, but even Channing Tatum was good in this laugh riot riff on a not so classic TV series. The same series that gave us Johnny Depp is now fodder for the very funny Jonah Hill (who also had a hand in writing the script) and the equally funny Channing (who knew?); with a strong script that makes as much fun at itself as it does the series, '21 Jump Street' is a memorable comedy worth repeated viewings.
'Mirror Mirror' - The first of the Snow White films this year was less than memorable. The darker 'Snow White and the Huntsman' while a better film, is not one for this kids like 'Mirror Mirror' and I think that's where 'Mirror Mirror' fails. It tried too hard to be cute. Julia Roberts seemed lost in the role as the evil queen, all butter and no mean. It is worth a Redbox rental as something to keep the kids busy while you go watch my next selection:
'The Artist' - A wonderful film to view! If you didn't see it in theaters - pick it up today! Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director - in total, 5 awards for this well deserving film. Shot entirely in black and white as well as silent (mostly) - this loving tribute to the silent film era is a pure joy to view. More than a rental, this is one that needs to be in your collection!
'Wrath of the Titans' - An Ok addition to the 'Clash of the Titans' series has our hero Perseus (Sam Worthington) battling to save mankind from the death dealing Kronos. Zeus (Liam Neeson) and the rest of the cast are back in all of their hammy glory. Certainly worth a Redbox trip if only for an evening escape from the heat!
'A Thousand Words' Eddie Murphy continues his descent into career hell with this mess barely worth the 21 words I have now given it.
