DVD Releases for Week of 9/18/2012
Well - once again I am late in getting the new releases up! I apologize - many things happening in my other 'work' life and I have once again neglected my writing! Luckily it is a slow DVD week, but there are some fine releases in it!
'The Cabin In The Woods' - I have often said that a PG-13 horror movie will, ultimately, be boring and terrible. For the most part I have been right and there is always a fantastic R rated horror movie that proves me right! Writer Josh Whedon (a fan boy favorite!) and director Drew Goddard (another fan boy favorite) craft one of the most original, entertaining and down right scary horror movies in some time! With a mind blowing script, fantastic visuals and solid performances from the up and coming cast, 'The Cabin In The Woods' is a horror film buff dream! This is a MUST rental and grab it in BluRay if you can, you will not be disappointed!
'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' - A sweet and endearing tale about a group of senior citizens who travel to India to 'outsource' their retirement. Filled with veteran actors in the twilight of their careers, 'Marigold' is sweet, funny, touching - one of the perfect feel good movies of the summer that no one saw. This is another must see rental that will just make you smile. Filled with wonderful writing, outstanding performances and very beautiful scenery, 'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' is well worth the check-in!
'Katy Perry: Part of Me' - I am more of a classic rock kind of guy and I have to admit, that most of the 'new' music out today simply bores me (with the exception of artists like Zac Brown or Adele); but there is something about Katy Perry and her bubble gum music that just seems to take me back to the days of The Archies and I just smile. More a glorified press kit that anything else, 'Katy Perry: Part of Me' was toe tapping fun. The woman is a stage performer and can sing too! A fun and welcome treat for the senses!
'Hysteria' - I have admitted this before, I am a sucker for period romance movies; especially the farcical types. 'Hysteria' is intended to be such a piece and with pedigrees like Maggie Gyllenhall, Jonathan Pryce, Hugh Dancy and Rupert Everett, I expected so much better! Director Tanya Wexler is so busy knowingly winking at the audience with her ponderous direction, the actors are never allowed to act and the story never gets beyond the old 'wink-wink, nod-nod' approach. What could have been a very well done romantic comedy about the sexual liberation of woman, is ruined by childish, sniggering humor. Disappointing.
