DVD Releases for Week of 9/11/2012
Such a solemn day for new DVD releases, but we honor those who have left us by carrying on and continuing to build a better world! So, let us never forget. Also, let us never stop striving for peace and justice!
This will actually be two weeks worth of releases as I was inundated with work last week! Sorry about that - but enjoy!
'Piranha 3DD' - Ok - with a title like 'Piranha 3DD' you can't have any expectations what so ever. So don't. While the original 'Piranha' was a campy tongue in cheek classic last summer - this '3D' horror comedy is just an excuse for tacky dirty old man humor. The saving grace is David Hasseloff. Yeah - I said it.
'Safe' - Jason Statham is still one of my favorite bad asses and I am afraid he is a bit wasted with the likes of 'The Expendables'. Here in 'Safe', Statham is back to his early days of inventive action and violence as an ex cage fighter/cop who refuses to take a dive and finds himself in trouble with the mob. While avoiding them, he happens upon a little girl who requires his protection. High flying action leaves little room for dialogue or plot, but that's ok, just enjoy the ride!
'The Five Year Engagement' - I am not sure if there is anything that Jason Segel can't do that isn't funny, charming and just down right fun! Along with the wonderful Emily Blunt, the story follows the criss cross lives of two people in love on very different career paths. While a little longer than it needs to be, this romantic comedy has the perfect chemistry of Segel and Blunt to play off of. Another hit from writer/star Segel and we con only hope it continues!
'Titanic' - A ship hits an iceberg, sinks. Oh and Leonardo DiCaprio is it it. Oh and Kate Winslet is topless in it. Oh and it made a bizzilion dollars. Oh please kill me before Celion Dion sings that God awful song again.
'Girl in Progress' - It's funny, Eva Mendes has only two setting: fantastic or make me want to kill myself. Unfortunately for her, 'Girl in Progress' will make you want to kill yourself. Cliche riddled, uneven in pacing and downright poorly acted, 'Girl in Progress' attempts to tell the tale of a struggling single Mom. After this, struggling single Moms are distancing themselves from this movie quicker than Bill Clinton from an office full of interns.
'October Baby' - Ok - there are some movies that just need to be made and this faith based Pro-Life drama should have never made it to the screen. The horrifying premise has the main character struggling with a mysterious illness while in college. The illness leads to her discovery that she is in fact adopted AFTER her birth mother failed a botched abortion attempt. Forget the fact that this would never happen, the story is just simply horrifying, in the 'I can't believe they actually paid to film this' way.
'For Greater Glory' - Mexico's war of 1820 is bought to very bland life by Andy Garcia. With an overly simple view of the war, thin characters and poor direction, 'For Greater Glory' suffers from what could have been rather than what was.
'What To Expect When You Are Expecting' - Loaded with stars, this should have been a hit, instead we get a standard romantic comedy, stuffed with standard, unfunny lines and situations. we've seen it all before in a thousand sitcoms. Not even worth the Redbox $1.20. I'll tell you what to expect, expect to be disappointed.
'Snow White and the Huntsman' - A dark and twisted version of Snow White that delivers on so many levels, not the least of which is the perfect Charlize Theron as the evil queen, stealing each and every scene she is in. Kristen Stewart is passable as Snow White, but not so much so to make up for Twilight. Chris Hemsworth is proving to be quite the Hollywood star and is perfectly cast as well. Rupert Sanders delivers a dark and foreboding tale that is NOT your Disney telling of Snow White, with stunning visuals that are well worth the extra price for a BluRay!
