DVD Releases for Week of 9/24/2012
ARRRGGGHH! Late again - this has been a hectic week for my and it is only halfway over! Thankfully - I have a handful of DVDs available this week, including the blockbuster 'The Avengers'! Hang on - here we go:
'Marvel's The Avengers' - With a fantastic script that kept the super humans, well, human and non-stop action sequences that delivered one "WOW" after the other; 'Marvel's The Avengers' not only lived up to the hype, but exceeded it. Thanks mostly to constant fan boy favorite Joss Whedon at the director as well as writer helm, his love of the comic book hero oozed through each lovingly shot frame. The ensemble cast was picture perfect and I am eagerly awaiting the sequel! This is a BluRay MUST have!
'Damsels in Distress' - With terrific acting and an equally terrific soundtrack, this mediocre movie would have been bland at the very best. Three college friends set out to remake life at their otherwise boring and mediocre college. Director Whit Stillman has never been one to make a movie with much plot, he tends to amble I think, and here he suffers from the same malady. Thankfully the cast, including teh very talented and beautiful Greta Gerwig, save the day. Not a bad choice for a Redbox night!
'The Samaritan' - Ok, someone needs to tell Samuel L Jackson that making bad movies like 'Snakes on a Plane' and having them be a hit - is a ONCE IN A LIFETIME occurrence. Please Samuel, go back to making good movies - you are a terrific actor that is wasting his time on paychecks! Leave this cliche ridden mess in the DVD hopper.
'The Tall Man' - It's nice to see Jessica Biel in a role that has some teeth. If you have kids and have ever lost sight of them for a moment, this movie will strike a nerve. Creepy and dark but often a little too preachy, 'The Tall Man' is an effective horror tale that will give you a chill or two! You may have to concede that director Pascal Laugier has no feel for an action scene, but he can be forgiven that. It's not a bad rental at all for a crisp fall evening!
