DVD Releases for Week of 2/19/2013

It's only a few days until the Oscar telecast and it is only fitting that the Best Picture winner is released today! Speaking of Oscars, did you enter the 'Outguess Bob's Oscar Picks' contest yet? Better hurry! The selection process closes at 6:00 PM CST Sunday!!

'Argo' - I am righting a wrong here today; in my Top 10 Films of the Year list, I placed 'Argo' behind 'Zero Dark Thirty'. Perhaps that was more of a timing issue than anything else, but I am man enough to admit when I was wrong. 'Argo' is truly the Best Picture of the year and deserves all the accolades. I think that Ben Affleck may be just this generations Clint Eastwood. By that, I mean that he just may turn out to be one of the better actors turned director in some time. After thinking his first directorial effort 'Gone Baby Gone' was a one shot masterpiece, he followed that up three years later with 'The Town', a film that should have saw Oscar praise. Now, two years after 'The Town', Affleck surely presents us with probably the best film of the year: 'Argo'. I am hoping that his next project is sooner rather than later based on his consistent maturity and growth as a filmmaker. If you have not seen 'Argo; yet, go out and rent it TODAY! If you have seen it, see it again! This is a movie that is even better the second time around! A true marvel!

'Monsters Inc. - 3D' - While it may not have the message or sophistication of the 'Toy Story' series, 'Monsters. Inc.' is a delightful and fully satisfying Pixar/Disney entry! Re-released in 3D, just in time to hype the sequel (or more accurately prequel) 'Monster University', 'Monsters, Inc.' is no less fun for kids of all ages!

'Sinister' - Even though it is filled with cliché horror film moments and recycled plot points, 'Sinister' still does deliver some decently scary moments! It's not a bad rental at all on a cold, dark night by the firelight! Just try to look past the more recycled moments and you just might enjoy a good scare or two!

'Anna Karenina' - Tolstoy's novel of forbidden love has been made and remade over and over. At times to great success and at others to, well, not so great success. While Joe Wright's vision is certainly ambitious, it is clumsy and confusing, taking away not only from the story, but from some very strong performances. It's not a bad rental though, as long as you can stay awake and pay attention. The lesson here, never try to out do Tolstoy!

'Fun Size' - There is nothing 'fun' about the size of this movie which runs 1 hour and 25 minutes too long. Yes, the 'tween' comedy is dead on arrival.

'For A Good Time Call' - Don't call director Jamie Travis who has no sense of comedic timing at all. Trying to capitalize of the success of 'Bridesmaids', this sad attempt at a female centered 'R' rated comedy falls flat on it's face. While well intended, the jokes are flat and unoriginal. Leave this on the shelf.
