DVD Releases for Week of 10/09/2012
It's a light week for DVD releases - but it a good one - I actually liked all of the releases (some more than others!). So read on - and, as always - comments and feedback are always welcome!
'Prometheus' - Ridley Scott's very ambitious prequel to 'Alien' may not answer all of the questions left open by the franchise, but it does provide a visually stunning, sometimes frightening look into the beginning of the end of mankind. Without a doubt, Scott is a brilliant filmmaker and the master of the SciFi/Horror genre. None can do better and this epic film will stand the test of time. Performances from the stellar cast are nothing short of perfect; Michael Fassbender as the android David will become a cult sensation I am sure. Charlize Theron as a murderous corporate executive is a turn that some will not soon forget. With eye popping visual effects and a story that is nothing short of genius; 'Prometheus' is a worthy addition to the 'Alien' franchise. A must own film on BluRay for sure!
'The Raven' - What if a serial killer wanted to pit himself against Edgar Allan Poe by actually committing the crimes in Poe's stories? All to lure Poe out to the open in a cat and mouse game of wits? That's the premise of this 'Saw'/'Sherlock Holmes' mash-up starring John Cusack as Poe. The plot is a bit thin and the acting is a bit uneven, with the story having a little trouble finding a decent pace; but overall, it is entertaining and as always, Cusack proves to be a solid actor despite the holes in the plot. Not worth the price of a DVD or BluRay, it is certainly worth the price of a Redbox rental!
'Rock of Ages' - Based on the hit Broadway play, 'Rock of Ages' never takes itself too seriously and is as fun as the bubble gum 80's hair band rock they are glorifying! Don't try to take it too seriously, instead just sit back and let your toes tap to the tunes you grew up with. Tom Cruise as Stacee Jaxx is the embodiment of a Rock God and is worth the price of the DVD alone! Don't bother with the soundtrack, the vocals aren't that great, but when joined with the visuals, they will leaving you smiling all the way to the end.
