'World War Z' - buzzed about bomb is a bonafide hit!

'World War Z' does something in a movie that hasn't been done in quite sometime, it manages to shock without bludgeoning you with blood and brutality; it manages to scare and quicken the pulse without the knowing of what is right around the corner. With a troubled production, several rewrites and a re-shoot of the ending; 'World War Z' manages to shake off the bad press and deliver some quality thrills. Is the ending a bit weak? Sure it is, but the proceeding content more than makes up for it. For the most part, 'World War Z' is a fine piece of summer movie fun, bought together by Producer/Star Brad Pitt and director Marc Foster with dedication as well as ferocity.

With Zombies in high gear and becoming a bit saturated; 'World War Z' offers a bit of a fresher take on the genre; opting to go the route of the superior '28 Days Later', treating the 'zombies' as rabid infected humans bent on infecting other humans. Zombies are only mentioned as an errant email is sent out warning other nations of the disease breakout. Here, the 'zombies' move in mad mobs, crawling over each other to scale walls and overrun cities in the rabid desire to spread the infection. Pitt is Gerry Lane, a semi retired United Nations worker who is tasked to try and find a cure for the epidemic.

While the source material, a novel by Max Brooks, is far better, Pitt and director Foster do what they can in trying to bring the scope of the novels to the screen. I am certain Pitt has developed a tent pole franchise for himself with this series and I am looking forward to the inevitable sequel. While plagued with the bad press that almost always seems to follow a highly anticipated summer blockbuster; I am happy to say that Pitt and company deliver one of the most thrilling movies of the year thus far. With fantastic effects and a less is more attitude, 'World War Z' is a 3 1/2 star effort that will become a 4 star effort in the near future if handled properly! Go see it on the big screen, where is deserves to be seen. 3D is probably overkill on this one!
