DVD Releases For Week of 5/28/2013

It's a holiday week, so I am a day behind! Just not catching breaks lately! Luckily, only a few movies released as we are into Summer Blockbuster season! DVDs tend to get put on the back burner...

'Dark Skies' - I am used to Keri Russell doing far better work than this insipid attempt at a supernatural thriller. Check out FX's 'The Americans' for Keri Russell doing Emmy worthy work. This totally forgettable 'thriller' written and directed (my first clue to this being a bomb) by Scott Stewart is a vain attempt to capitalize on previous films like 'Insidous', 'Paranormal Activity' and others. The only problem, the story is laughable and the direction is rudderless. Leave this one in the box.

'Lore' - Unless you got a chance to go to one of the various film festivals, you missed this very harrowing and dark tale of 5 children who are left parentless after their SS Nazi parents are interred by the victorious Allies at the end of World War II. A chilling tale of the consequences of actions that parents make and the chilling effect it has on their children. A must see, not only from the historical perspective, but from the very perspective that we are what we teach our children.

'The Numbers Station' - What the heck has happened to John Cusack? Lately he seems to be making more direct to video thuds than anything else. This is so disappointing as he is one of our generations finest talents; he just seems to have poor decision making skills (or even worse management). In 'The Numbers Station', Cusack sadly attempts to recreate his Martin Blank character (Grosse Pointe Blank, a favorite of mine) as a Block Op CIA agent filled with emotional angst over his job. YAWN! Re-watch the fantastic 'Grosse Point Blank' instead of this boring mess.
