'My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2' - A Big Fat Cute film!
While it doesn't really live up to the original, 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2' is a harmlessly cute film that delivers genuine smiles throughout. Writer and star Nia Vardalos once again revisits her nutty family, only this time, her parents are getting married (for reasons I am still trying to figure out). While many of the jokes are recycled from the first film, they still work!
Much of the film is a series of one time vignettes that may have been better told on a family friendly sitcom; but as romantic comedies go, 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2' delivers some very harmless fun. Back are all the characters we fell in love with in the first film, with John Corbett as the non-Greek husband and now father to the newly introduced character Paris, played by Elena Kampouris (who I thought the development of the daughter was a bit wasted) leading the pack. Fan familiar faces Michael Constanstine (Gus, the father), Lainie Kazan (the mother), Andrea Martin (Aunt Voula) and all the rest are present in fine comedic form.
I did have one question though, like how did Toula (Nia Vardalos) and Ian (John Cobett) have a child old enough to enter into college when they were only married in the first film 14 years ago? Wouldn't that mean that Paris is a 13 year old entering college?
Ah well, the liberty of the simple romantic comedy, you don't think you just enjoy! The film, as directed by Kirk Jones, is filled with too many simple pan shots and one angled settings; but then again, fancy camera work is not needed here. My advice, this is a family friendly, enjoyable B+ film that will make you smile and (predictably) tug at your heartstrings in the end. I nice escape from all of the explosions and carnage of the spring film season!
