Bullock & McCarthy bring 'The Heat'
I am beginning to think that director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) is the only director who knows how to bring out the best comedy that Melissa McCarthy has to offer. He seems to know where she is centered and never tries to make her any more than that. Unlike the failure 'Identity Thief' where McCarthy was simply underused; Feig builds on McCarthy's talent for verbal as well as physical comedy.
In 'The Heat', McCarthy is a Boston cop who finds herself paired with a straight laced FBI agent (Sandra Bullock) in the hunt for a drug lord who has come to Boston. Think old time 70's buddy cop film except the foul mouthed tough cop is Mellisa McCarthy! If you saw 'Bridesmaids' I think you agree that the standout was the McCarthy's foul mouthed government agent. I think most would agree as well, that an entire movie based around that character would have been a riot. Obviously so did Paul Feig and thus 'The Heat' was made.
Bullock is an excellent foil for McCarthy and while the plot was fairly predictable; you didn't mind knowing what was going to happen next because you were sure it was going to be funny. Normally, in an R rated comedy, you expect a lot of swearing. While you are not disappointed in 'The Heat', you never really grow weary of it nor less surprised by it; and that is because of the near perfect timing of McCarthy and the very slow breakdown of the uppity Bullock.
With moments of pure comedic genius and others of 'alright already', 'The Heat' is a fine escape from the kids on a summer night! A 3 star effort that is proof that McCarthy is a comedic juggernaut!
