'Carrie' - Totally uninspired & unnecessary remake...
I remember when the Brian De Palma version of the Stephen King novel 'Carrie' first came out, back in 1976, it was considered cutting edge and quite horrific. De Palma was the new master of suspense at the time and he proved it well with the perfectly cast Sissy Spacek as Carrie, a bullied young woman who discovers she had powerful telekinesis ability. The original worked on so many levels and to this day holds up as one of the modern horror classics.
On the other hand, the 2013 remake of 'Carrie' as envisioned by director Kimberly Peirce, seems almost pointless.
I haven't been this bored in a movie since...well I have never been this bored in a movie.
Chloë Grace Moretz takes over the role of Carrie from Sissy Spacek and does a better than average job of filling her shoes. Unfortunately for her, I couldn't help but wonder when Hit Girl was going to appear and stop taking all the crap that Carrie took! Julianne Moore is creepy but not in a good way, in almost a very sad way as Carrie's sociopath, religiously zealot mother. Normally Moore is one of my favorite female leads, here, she seems to be more of a caricature than a character.
The main problem however is director Peirce who gives us absolutely no reason to become invested in the film. The whole reason you jump into a remake is to tell a different or updated tale. Rather, Peirce simply resorts to a simple refilming of a classic. Her style is not even a close second to De Palma and we quickly find ourselves disinterested. There simply was no intensity to the entire film.
If you are looking for a good Halloween scare, leave this 1 star bore in the theater. Instead, Netflix or Redbox the original 'Carrie' or better still, check out Chloë Grace Moretz in the very scare worthy 'Let Me In'. While Moretz is a bit younger, you get a real good feel for the pure talent this young lady has!
